Hard luck to our Intermediate hurlers who lost a thrilling County Hurling League semi-final on Sunday afternoon.
A late Ciaran Haugh point levelled the game in normal time, and both teams had periods of momentum in extra time, it was Ballina who scored two late points to win by the smallest margin (Lorrha 5-20 Ballina 2-30).
Playing with the aid of the breeze, Ballina built a 0-12 to 0-6 lead at half-time at Tony Reddin Park. We scored the first five points of the second half to get back in the game, but Ballina responded with a scoring spree of their own to go five points clear.
Two quick-fire goals in the last 10 minutes from Cian Hogan and Donnacha O’Meara turned the game around however, giving Lorrha the lead. Ballina again responded to get back on top, but Ciarán’s late long-range score levelled the sides (Lorrha 2-15 Ballina 1-18) at full-time.
Our lads struck for three goals in quick succession in the first half of extra-time, through Cian Hogan, Bonner and Colm Fogarty. That gave us a six-point lead at the break, but Ballina surged in the second half to close the gap and eventually overtake us in injury time. They go on to face Burgess in the final.
Congratulations to the team on a positive league campaign, which included four victories. It was great to get Brian and Bonner back on the field today, both of whom made a terrific impact. Thanks to all the supporters who came along and created a great atmosphere on our home ground.
Next up for our lads is the North Intermediate Championship semi-final against Moneygall on July 1.
